I hope you are all having a wonderful summer. I think of you often and miss you but have been enjoying more sleep than usual, a lovely time on holiday in Italy (a certain few of you would have much enjoyed all the flowers and beautiful dresses at my friend’s wedding!) and lots of visiting museums. I hope all of you have managed to do some fun and interesting activities over the holidays.Â

In two weeks time you will be starting Year 1 with Mr Fielder – you will have a super time but before you move on up I just want to tell you how proud I am of all of you for your fantastic work this year and how wonderful it has been getting to know all of you. I look forward to catching up when we start the new school year 🙂
This week we were visited by what turned out to be a narwhal whale who had left her long tooth outside and retuned to claim it today after we found it for her!Â
What kind of sea do narwhals live in?Â
We were also visited by Stuart the minion who is very cheeky and made some rather rude noises (!) but was super fun and spending time with him in our groups gave us a good chance to work on our sharing skills 🙂Â
We were fascinated to watch a video about oil slicks during our Big Talk time and learn more about how they affect so many things.Â
Can you name 3 things affected by an oil slick? (birds, fish, fishermen, other sea creatures etc.)Â
What new facts can you learn from the videos when you watch them?Â

This week we started our Under the Sea topic and  have been learning about sea creatures, especially whales.
What facts have you learnt about whales?
There are lots of different kinds of whales; how many can you name?Â
In our story Whale Magic the mummy and baby humpback whales had been swimming for a long time to try and get away from an oil slick.
Can you explain what an oil slick is to your adult?Â
Oil slicks are terrible for the environment. What ways can we help take care of our world?Â
On Tuesday we will be going on our trip to Vauxhall City Farm. If you haven’t yet handed in the permission slip and money for the trip please do 🙂 There are also a few more spaces for adults to come on the trip with us so if you would like to please let me or Ms Atkinson know on Monday. At the moment the weather forecast is predicating warm but not too hot temperatures (23 degrees c) and the possibilities of showers so suncream, sun hats and a light raincoat would all be a good idea 🙂Â

It has been so great to be back with you this week and we have had lots of fun!Â

We finished off our dinosaur topic by painting dinosaurs and writing and talking about them for the science display we will be putting up in the entrance hall. We also named the dinosaur who hatched (Brian-Rosie) – we voted on the name so as to be as fair as possible – and excavated some dinosaur skeletons from ice!Â
Can you explain to your adults all the different ways you melted the ice so you could free the dinosaur skeletons trapped there?Â
In literacy this week we did some very important letter writing – we wrote to Mrs Peake asking if we could be allowed to go on a class trip to the farm! You wrote some super letters and Mrs Peake said that we can go!Â
How do we start a letter? (you need to say who the letter is for, so you write ‘Dear‘ to ‘To‘)
How do you finish a letter? (by saying who the letter is from, so ‘From‘ or ‘Love from‘)Â
What did you need to include in your letter to Mrs Peake about the farm trip? (we had to ask if we could please go, why we should be allowed to go and what we would enjoy there)Â
On trip to Vauxhall City Farm will take place on Tuesday 4th July. If you are interested in being one of the adults accompanying us then please let myself or Ms Atkinson know ASAP.Â
During our Big Talk time this week we learnt about where eggs come from and how it is important to think about what the lives of the hens who lay the eggs are like.Â

What an exciting first week back we have had! We met a dinosaur who had time -travelled to come and see us, learnt about dinosaurs, had a new friend join our class and had an election where we voted!Â
What facts do you know about dinosaurs?

In our election we had 3 different candidates to choose from; they all promised different things and we had to work out which were the best promises. Can you remember why you voted for the candidate you chose? Check out the picture if you need a reminder of what they were promising 🙂Â
We had to think super carefully because some promises sounded good at first but then we realised that actually they would not be so good for our health over a long period of time. What do your adults think? Do they have any thoughts or feelings about the election that they would like to share with you?Â
On Friday it is Sports Day – Penguin adults if you are able to attend we would love to see you there! Penguins please remember to come to school in your PE kit ready to start our day of sporting fun! It would be a good idea to have put suncream on and to wear a hat as well.Â
